What American Football Leagues Can You Bet On?
LiveScore Bet offers opportunities across a variety of competitions. The biggest competitions include the NFL, which cumulates in the world-renowned Super Bowl, and the CFL. There are also college games that have large followings run by the NCAA.
NFL and the Super Bowl
The NFL (National Football League) was formed in 1920 as the APFA (American Professional Football Association), it was renamed to the NFL for the 1922 season. With 32 teams divided equally between the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference, this league is the highest level of professional American football.
The league consists of a yearly season. This includes a three-week preseason, followed by the regular season of 18 weeks, where each team will play 17 games. After the regular season, seven teams from each conference advance to the playoffs which end with the final, known as the Super Bowl, which is played between the AFC and NFC champions.
CFL
The CFL is the Canadian Football League, which does differ slightly from American football. Founded in 1954, this is a younger version of American football and also features slightly different rules compared to the NFL. For example, the CFL football field is wider and longer, you're allowed 12 players as opposed to 11 and are only allowed three downs per possession as opposed to four in NFL.
The CFL is the highest level of Canadian football and consists of nine teams divided into two divisions. There are five teams in the West Division and four in the East Division. The regular season now lasts over 21 weeks, which is followed by a three-week play-off. This ends with one of Canada's largest annual sporting events, the Gret Cup.
NCAA Football
College football remains extremely popular in the US. There are six major conferences within college football, which, up until 2014 played in the Bowl Championship Series. The 2014 season saw resistance to a playoff system finish, which led to the creation of the College Football Playoff (CFP). This is a four-team tournament, with participants chosen and seeded by a 13-member selection committee culminating in the National Championship game.
How to Bet on American Football
The most common market in American football betting is on the game winner, commonly referred to as a moneyline bet. There are also spread and total points which are also popular markets. Another option is to bet on awards such as the Heisman Trophy Winner. LiveScore Bet offers live American football odds so you can even bet in-play.
Winner
American football is a two-way betting market, as games are not allowed to end with a draw. Betting on the moneyline, therefore, is simply your pick of the game winner. Odds will greatly vary between each game played, as it will depend on how the two teams are matched.
Spread Betting
Known as handicap betting in the UK, spread betting is where you can bet for the favourite of a game to win by more than a certain number of points. Alternatively, if you bet on the underdogs, you can see profit even if they lose, so long as they lose by less than the spread. This is a great way for extending the odds compared to simply betting on the winner.
For example, if Team A are the clear favourite in a match against Team B, simply betting on the favourite will likely mean your returns are limited. However, betting on Team A to win with a -5 spread means that to cover the spread 'Team A' has to win by at least 5 points, which increases your odds and resultingly, your return on the bet.
Over/under
Over/under betting is where you bet that a certain game statistic is greater than, or fewer than a given number. The most common over/under bet in American Football concerns the total points. When betting over/under the actual outcome of the game, as in which team wins and which team loses, doesn't affect your winnings. All that matters is the total number of points.
Outrights
Outright bets are bets on outcomes within an entire league or competition, as opposed to bets on individual games. The most popular American Football outright bet is, of course, the Super Bowl winner. However, you can also bet on Conference and Division winners too, along with which stage you think each team will be eliminated and whether they make the playoffs. Such selections are also available for the CFL and College Football. Choose your favourite to win the Super Bowl, Grey Cup and National Champion.
